Public Defenderís Office

Established under Article 18 of the County Law of the State of New York, the Public Defenderís Office is in effect a law firm for the poor, specializing in criminal defense. The role of the Public Defenderís Office is to effectively represent indigent persons accused of criminal offenses in Rockland County at court appearances in county and local justice courts. Additionally, the Public Defenderís Office prosecutes appeals on behalf of its clients to various Appellate Courts, plus represents clients charged with parole and probation violations.
As stated in the Charter, the Public Defender shall:
represent, without charge, at the request of the defendant or by order of the court with the consent of the defendant,
each indigent defendant who is charged with a crime in the County.
